My Gene Discovery Story
For as long as I can remember, I’ve felt like I was doing everything right but still not getting the results I deserved.
I ate healthy food, exercised regularly, and tried every “balanced” approach out there, yet my weight fluctuated constantly, my energy was unpredictable, and my mood was unstable.
On the outside, I looked fine. I was what many people call skinny fat: small in size but struggling internally with hormonal imbalances, mental health challenges, inflammation, and insulin resistance.
When I began studying naturopathic medicine in 2014, everything started to click. I learned how blood sugar regulation, stress, gut health, and inflammation all influence one another. I realised insulin resistance was at the root of many of my issues.
Once I began using naturopathic and nutritional strategies to address it, I finally saw real change. I lost 20 kilos steadily and sustainably, and for the first time, I felt in control of my health.
But maintaining that progress wasn’t always easy. Whenever life became stressful or I drifted too far from the eating pattern that suited my metabolism, the weight crept back, my hormones shifted, and the fatigue returned.
Then came one of the most stressful seasons of my life. I stopped looking after myself, and within months I had regained most of the weight I had lost. My blood work showed insulin resistance again, and I felt completely defeated.
That was when I decided to dig deeper. I ordered a genetic test to see if there was something in my biology I was missing.
The results were life-changing.
I discovered I carry several genetic variations that influence how I burn fat, regulate insulin, and manage inflammation, but also genes that affect mood, mental health, and hormonal balance. My results even explained my long-standing food intolerances to things like gluten and histamine.
This was the biggest surprise for me. All of my favourite foods, even the healthy ones, were high in histamine, and they were actually exacerbating and prolonging the constant brain fog, fatigue, and rashes I had been dealing with for years.
It gave me a whole new understanding of why, even when I was being “super healthy,” even when my insulin levels were balanced and all my blood tests were coming back normal, I still didn’t feel quite right.
I realised I wasn’t eating in a way that supported my genes.
Knowing this changed everything. I could finally personalise my nutrition, supplementation, and lifestyle in a way that worked with my unique biology. My energy improved, my mood stabilised, my digestion settled, and my inflammation markers came down.
