I'm Michaela Sparrow

CLINICAL NATUROPATH, NUTRITIONIST, ANTI-AGEING PRACTITIONER

I was once a hot, hot mess when it came to my health (both physical & mental).
I have been in that dark place of dealing with chronic symptoms with no answers and no end in sight.

It wasn't until I started studying naturopathic medicine that I realised that majority of my symptoms had a root cause (or several root causes) and most of my health issues stemmed from trauma & chronic stress & anxiety.

I had always been interested in health & nutrition and actually thought I was doing all the right things my health, reading about the latest superfoods, taking numerous random expensive supplements and thinking I was eating right for my body. And yet, as it turned out, my depression & anxiety from the trauma I experienced in my teenage years became a catalyst for the breakdown of my body, and what my body needed, was not what I was giving it.

As I learned whilst studying my degree and started diving deep into my own health with blood tests and my health history, I had insulin resistance, estrogen dominance, adrenal dysfunction, hypothyroidism & terrible gut health.

Using the knowledge I had learnt from my degree I was able to look at the relationship between all of my body systems and how they impact each other and little by little over a 6 month period I was able to transform my health.

Before I put together a naturopathic treatment plan for myself:

I was 20 kgs overweight (even though I was going to the gym everyday & "eating healthy") and could not lose anything, always irritable, hangry, anxious, always absolutely exhausted, with terrible bloating and gas. My period was an enemy I had terrible cramping, clotting and it was irregular (turns out PMS symptoms are not normal). I was waking in the middle of the night around 2-3am every night. I was in my mid 20s yet I felt like an old woman.

Once I made a plan to peel back the layers I was able to:

Lose the 20kg (and keep it off....bar the couple of kilos I gain on those memory making holidays...worth it though), have long lasting energy, literally jumping out of bed excited to start my day. No more irritability or fatigue, no more waking in the night, and my mood stabilised. I was a whole new person. 

I believe my own health struggles are a gift, they gave me the empathy and understanding that is needed to help guide other women through this journey.

I now promote and live an 80/20 lifestyle. Because I believe restriction, deprivation and perfectionism are all forms of self sabotage (and these were big players in my binge/yoyo diet/disordered eating cycle I had prior to healing my body).

80/20 for me is being healthy 80% of the time and then letting my hair down 20% of the time. This kind of translates to 1-2 cheat meals a week, where I eat whatever I feel like (some times this might be deep fried chicken & waffles, other times it might just be going out for dinner at a fancy restaurant and enjoying all of the delicious foods, or even just a good steak & big baked potato). Most of the time my "cheats" aren't even cheats, because I know I can have whatever I want, I really don't eat a food unless I really really want it (so I dont eat crap for the sake of it). I love love a well made margarita, have a spot in my heart for a spicy bloody mary and I love a good cheese platter. Actually there isn't really a food I dont love. 

Being healthy and healing your body, is not just about diet, supplements, exercise. It is about having the right balance in everything.
